The topic is skincare, and I will explain, exactly what these are and what to use them to.

Skincare can be a jungle to find your way around in.
In this series we are looking closely at the different types of skincare.

We will look at what it is & what it does

What types exist

Do you need it & when should you use it

Today we will focus on Sunscreen.

You can also watch this series on my YouTube Channel.

WHAT IS A SUNSCREEN AND WHAT DOES IT DO?

A sunscreen is a Skincare product that has the purpose to protect you against the sun, and the damages that can come to your skin when exposing yourself to it.

Just to get the facts straight before we really start, just so everyone follows:
UVA causes premature aging- these can pass through windows
UVB causes sunburns – these do not pass-through windows.

If we lay it out in Bullet points (because I like to do that), the benefits you get from a sunscreen are:

  • Overall protects against UVA and UVB rays
  • Decreased risk of skin cancers
  • Protects against sunburns
  • Helps with preventing premature skin aging
  • Helps to keep your skin tone even

WHAT TYPES EXIST?

There are overall 2 different types of sunscreen formulas -Chemical and Physical.
The Chemical type absorbs into the skin, while the physical sits on top as a protective layer.

Creme – has a creamy texture

Lotion – lighter than a creamy while being less greasy because of the higher water content.

Mist/ Spray – is quite as it sounds; you simply spray it on the face or body.

Mousse- is sprayed out, but have to be massaged in.

Milk – One of the lightest consistencies

Balm – Thick and creamy

Stick – Solid that is smeared on the face

Oil – Thin and oily consistency

Powder – In powder form

DO I NEED IT & WHEN SHOULD I USE IT?

If we lived in a perfect world, everyone would use Sunscreen everyday and remember to reapply every two hours. If that answers the questions, then good; if not, let me explain some more.

Sunscreen may be the most important product in skincare, because it helps with something, we all face – sun damage.
Though the sun is great- it gives vitamin D, makes us happy and helps with depression (that’s how happy our bodies and we ourself get when seeing the sun), it can also cause a variation of damages to the skin and our bodies (As told in the first part of this post)
There are only two ways we can protect ourselves against this (Three if we count never going out of a door and bolting our windows shut as a way). These are:

  1. Use clothes- like long sleeves, gloves and hats to make sure the sun does not touch us
  2. Use a Sunscreen to protect your body against the damaging rays of the sun

Those are the smartest ways to protect yourself. While putting on more clothes sounds simple, it is not always a funny thing- when it’s 30°C out there, or you just want the actual sun to touch you.

A good mix of both can be a good idea, where you only put on sunscreen the places you know the sun will touch you – like your face/neck and hands.

So, the actual answer to the question is: yes, you need to use it, and you should apply it 30 minutes prior to being in the sun, then reapply every two hours you are actually out there. That way you get the most out of it.

When looking for a Sunscreen a SPF of 30 is recommended, and 15 is the minimum recommendation.  Higher SPF than 30 does not provide much more protection.

If we take it in numbers:
SPF 15 protects against 93% UVB rays
SPF 30 protects against 97% UVB rays
SPF 50 protects against 98% UVB rays
SPF 100 protects against 99% UVB rays

No sunscreen blocks 100%

If you want to read some more on why higher SPF is not better, you can read about it on the “EWG” website, just google their name and “What is wrong with high SPF”.
You can also go the website for the “Skin Cancer Foundation” just search for “All about sunscreen”.

Or click these links lol: EWG & Skin Cancer Foundation

I really hope you learned something today- and please remember to take care of your skin!

If there is some type of skincare you would like explained, tell me in the comments and we will get to it.

I hope you all have a happy life, one day at a time!
